Phosphorous levels can be determined by using the same digestion procedure as in the Kjeldahl method for Nitrogen.

The Kjeldahl digestion systems can be used as an acid pre-treatment in total phosphate determination.

Aliquots are removed from the diluted digest in order to perform both Total phosphorous and TKN on the same digest. The aliquot is tested using colourimetry to determine the concentration of Phosphorous in the initial sample.

All automated colourimetric methods require sample and reagent blanks to be performed.
