Crushing and Grinding – Particle Size Reduction

Sample material, which is classified as hard, medium-hard and brittle can be crushed and reduced in size by using a variety of different techniques. These sample materials include: rocks, soils, construction materials and ceramics. In this section we have listed the FRITSCH sample preparation instruments, which use combinations of impact, force and shear to achieve the desired final fineness.

Laboratory sample preparation may be accomplished using a number of different FRITSCH instruments including:  jaw crushers, disk mills, cross beater mills, ball mills and an automated pestle and mortar grinder. For very fine grinding down to a final fineness of <20µm, ball milling is recommended.

Fundamental to all milling is the selection of material of construction for the grinding set; the grinding material must be harder than the sample being prepared. Depending upon the instrument, there may be up to seven different materials of construction available for the grinding set. These materials of construction include: agate, sintered corundum, silicon nitride, zirconium oxide, stainless steel, tempered steel and tungsten carbide.

Not only do considerations need to be given to the hardness of the grinding set, but also to the fact that some abrasion of the grinding set will take place contaminating the sample.

For advice on the most suitable laboratory sample preparation technique for your material, please enter the details of your material; indicating the amount of sample, the starting size and the final fineness required on our contact information sheet. We will then be able to advise on which FRITSCH laboratory sample preparation instrumentation will fulfil your requirements.
