Crude fibre is an empirical method where the starch and sugars are removed by digestion in acid and the protein is removed by digestion in alkali. That which remains is a measure of crude fibre. It is not a measurement of cellulose, hemicellulose or lignin. These can be determined by the determination of Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF), Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) and lignin methods.

This is not a determination of dietary fibre.

Crude Fibre is a result commonly required by producers of agricultural materials for food and feed. Crude fibre is often requested in the analysis of breads, chocolate and animal feeds.

As mentioned above crude fibre involves the digestion of the sample in acid then alkali. ADF and NDF methods are used to determine the cellulose and hemicellulose fraction, which are used to calculate the energy content of feeds.

ADF involves the digestion of the sample in a Sulphuric acid Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide solution.

NDF involves the digestion of the sample in a complex solution of EDTA, di-sodium tetra borate decahydrate, Sodium dodecyl sulphate, 2-ethoxyethanol and anhydrous di-sodium hydrogen phosphate. Followed by another digestion in an Amylase solution.

Gerhardt supply traditional fibre apparatus in which each sample is digested in a single beaker of reagent.

Gerhardt also supply the Fibrebag system, which uses traditional fibre apparatus but up to six samples can be digested in a single beaker of reagent.

The latest development in fibre analysis is the Fibretherm, a fully automated system, which digests up to 12 samples at a time.

The new systems closely emulate official methods, but allow multiple extractions to be performed in each boiling vessel. Filtrations under vacuum and the problems associated with the old methods have been eliminated. Throughput of tests per hour is increased dramatically and both accuracy and precision are improved.
