Crude Fibre and Acid Hydrolysis System

This method is typically done on food or animal feed. In food the method is known as total fat. Free fat is extracted using Soxhlet only. In animal feed the method is well know as Oil A. Where Oil A is total fat and Oil B is free fat.

The advantage of this method is that most types of food can be tested using this method including wet food such as dairy products.

The objective of the method is to free lipids bound to the protein molecules by boiling the sample in Hydrochloric acid. This digests the protein and frees the bound lipids.

Digestion times in the acid vary greatly according to the strength of acid used. The stronger the acid, the shorter the digestion time. Typically 4N HCl requires a 45-minute digestion

Once digested, the sample must be filtered and the acid washed out using water. Once all the acid as been removed the filtered sample is dried in a drying oven. The dried sample is then placed in a thimble and the fat extracted with Petroleum ether on a Soxhlet system.

Gerhardt supply two systems for the acid hydrolysis of food and feed samples. A traditional beaker system using a heating mantle, beakers and condensers plus an automated system, which performs a complete hydrolysis on up to six samples automatically, Hydrotherm.

Gerhardt also supply two systems for Soxhlet determination: Traditional Soxhlet system or a rapid Soxhlet system, Soxtherm.
