Determination of the Pepsin Digestible Protein content of Animal by-products.
The method has been designed to give more accurate nutritional information and energy figures for animal feed. The method crudely replicates animal digestion.
The principle of the method is to digest a de-fatted sample in a solution of Pepsin. Pepsin digests the protein in the animal feed. Once digested the protein goes into solution, is separated from the insoluble fraction and measured using the Kjeldahl Nitrogen method. The remaining insoluble fraction sample may contain some un-digested protein. This un-digested protein would normally be expected to pass through the animal and not contribute to the nutrition value of the feed. To calculate the amount of Pepsin digestible protein in a feed the total amount of protein is determined separately and then compared to the amount of Pepsin digested protein as a percentage.
% Pepsin Digestible Protein = Pepsin Digestible Protein / Total Protein x 100
Typically producers are looking for a very high percentage of Pepsin Digestible Protein in their products to ensure good nutritional contribution in the growth of the animal
Gerhardt supply a wide variety of Kjeldahl systems that are used in this procedure.
