A dried sample is finely ground through a 1mm sieve. The sample is weighed into a digestion tube and a small amount of distilled water added. Aqua regia (Hydrochloric acid / Nitric acid mix) is then carefully added. If there is a lot of foaming the acids must be added drop wise and then left to stand for several hours (the cold reaction).

Generally, the more organic material present in the sample the more prone it is to frothing or foaming. By increasing the cold reaction time this will reduce the number of ramping stages required.

If available, acid traps are filled with Nitric acid and fitted to the condensers. Samples are then placed into the digestion block and gently heated for around 2 hours between 160 ~ 180oC or up to 135oC if using polypropylene tubes. It may be necessary to programme in several ramping steps to stop excessive frothing or foaming in the tube.

At the end of the digestion the tubes are cooled and the acid made up to an accurate amount. The solution may then be analysed on an AA or ICP.
