Vapodest 10 Basic Steam Distillation Unit

The Gerhardt Vapodest rapid distillation units are suitable for Nitrate Nitrogen determination offering varying degrees of automation depending on the unit selected. The Nitrate Nitrogen is reduced in alkaline conditions using Devarda's alloy to produce Ammonia Nitrogen which is then steam distilled. If the sample already contains Ammonia Nitrogen then a separate sample is run without Devarda's alloy:

Nitrate nitrogen= Total Nitrogen – Ammonia nitrogen – organic nitrogen

A diluted sample is placed into a large distillation flask. Antifoam and Devarda's alloy is then added. The flask is placed onto the distillation unit and Sodium Hydroxide added through the integral pump of the Vapodest distillation unit. This can cause an effervescent reaction from the sample, so the unit is programmed with a delay before distillation proceeds.

The distillate is captured in a boric acid solution with indicator. Once distillation is complete the Boric acid is titrated back to a grey colour and the result recorded.

CALCULATION

%N    =     (mls of titrant - mls of blank) x Molarity of the acid x 1.4007

                                 Sample weight (g)

To determine the Ammonia Nitrogen percentage the above method is used less Devarda Alloy.
