ANALYSETTE 22 measuring range
ANALYSETTE 22 MicroTec plus high range
ANALYSETTE 22 MicroTec plus low range
FRITSCH have been manufacturing laser particle size analysers for over 25 years. In 1985, the concept of laser diffraction in a convergent laser beam with the patented FRITSCH measurement process was introduced. This measurement process has now become the international standard for fast, reliable and reproducible particle size analysis.
Laser diffraction / scattering is the most efficient way of determining the particle size distribution from 10 nanometres up to several millimetres. The sample is dispersed either as a dry powder in an air jet or as a liquid suspension. FRITSCH offer two laser particle size analysers to cover a wide range of particle size distributions.
The FRITSCH MicroTec plus covers a measurement range of 0.08µm up to 2mm.
The FRITSCH NanoTec covers a measurement range from 0.01µm up to 2mm.

MicroTec plus Measuring Unit
This instrument utlises dual laser technology, where a semi-conductor laser with a green short wave light is used to measure small particles, whilst an infrared long wave laser is used to measure the larger particle size ranges.
Both the green and the red lasers can be aligned rapidly and independently of each other through lateral motion. This means that the ideal wavelength is used for every particle size over a broad measurement range.
With the re-direction of the infrared long wave laser beam, the MicroTec plus allows for the most accurate measurement precision even for large particles within this compact instrument. To change to the green short wave laser for the measurement of small particles, the detector and the laser source are simply moved, whilst the measuring cell, remains fixed.
The MicroTec plus has been specifically designed with a modular system for both wet and dry dispersions, or for a combination with the small volume wet dispersion unit. All of the dispersion units can be connected to the MicroTec plus individually or in combination and are easily interchangeable.
Wet Dispersion Unit
Good particle size analysis relies on good dispersion of the particles in the measuring cell. Optimal dispersion can be accomplished with the MicroTec plus wet dispersion unit by using adjustable and programmability, of the pump parameters, the ultra sound performance and ultra sound duration prior to the start of the actual measurement. This produces a targeted and exactly reproducible dispersion of even difficult sample materials.
The dispersion process in the MicroTec plus is fully programmable and may be customised to suit individual requirements. For example: it is possible to programme in cycles for the automatic inspection of the dispersion state in reference to the dispersion duration. Or after adding the sample, a defined delay can be selected to allow the sample to be completely broken down with the help of the ultra sound.
Dry Dispersion Unit
Ideal measuring of powdery samples in an accelerated air flow - suitable for sample volumes of less than 1 cm3 to approx. 100 cm3.
The dispersion unit for dry samples prepares agglomerates using mechanical and pneumatic forces. The dosed sample is supplied by a new high-frequency feeder (hard-anodized) - continuous and residue-free. The dispersion takes place in an annular gap Venturi nozzle through air fins with aerodynamic wave formation at the nozzle outlet and high flow speed in the nozzle channel. The minimal required sample quantity is below 1 cm3.
Small Volume Wet Dispersion Unit
The small volume dispersion unit is very useful for particle size analysis involving solvents with a working volume of 100ml. The small volume dispersion unit is best used for low-density materials only. High-density materials may be limited to a particle size range of upto 300μm only.
The small volume dispersion unit for the MicroTec plus is not connected directly to the measuring unit. This means, that there is no automatic control and that the pump speed, the clean and fill routines have to be performed manually. In addition, the small volume dispersion unit does have the sonification function of the MicroTec plus dispersion unit.

ISO 13320
The accuracy and repeatability of all particle size analysis results, is very important. All FRITSCH laser particle size analysers are inspected and tested to ISO 13320 Particle Size Analysis – Laser Diffraction Methods. All FRITSCH laser particle size analysers greatly exceed the minimum standards laid down in ISO 13320.
ISO 13320 defines the following:
The fundamental measuring principle.
The optical arrangement of the laser particle analysers.
The key instrument parameters for users to ensure ease of comparision with different instruments.
Details on the use of the physical theories of light scattering, with particular reference to the Mie or Franhaufor theories.
Inspection of the minimum requirements for repeatability and accuracy with the suitable standard materials.
Particle size measurement using laser diffraction particle size analysis is based upon fundamental physical relationships. This means that the calibration of the instrument is not necessary. Instead the instrument should be regularly checked using a reference material, with a spherical shape to allow for the precise determination of the particle size with the help of laser diffraction.
Reference Materials
The refence materials supplied by FRITSCH, are supplied with precise dispersion and measurement instructions. The reference materials, are supplied with a NIST traceable certificate that states the upper and lower limits of the expected particle size.
